Solo Planning with Julie Mills 22 November 2010

What a full on day working with Julie! We had a mammoth task ahead of us, planning for the entire school over the next two years.

Amazing results, completed by 4pm and I love that we have a framework to work with over the next two years that gives us coverage right across the curriculum, which includes SOLO and integrates each curriculum topic within a term.

Very pleased with the outcome.

Visiting Auckland Schools Re: Solo Taxonomy Nov 2010

Another great trip with my cluster colleagues. We have become a tight bunch!

We visited three schools, Newmarket Primary, Halsey Drive Primary and ??????? will have to come back on that one.

Halsey Drive was the most impressive. The walls were plastered with evidence of SOLO teaching and learning examples from both children and the teachers. They ensured that the teachers were implementing and teaching SOLO examples when we observed in the classrooms. Classes from new entrants through to year 6 were fully engaged in SOLO Taxonomy pedagogy, using the language, HOT maps and rubrics. I would definitely recommend this school to any other schools thinking of taking on SOLO Taxonomy.

All teachers would benefit from visiting other schools like the above, especially junior teachers who feel SOLO is too hard to teach to new entrants. That's a myth after visiting Halsey, the babies were c0-constructing ideas using the Cause and Effect HOT map, not a Define map.

Lovely trip, both for learning opportunities and bonding with the cluster :)

ULearn10 Christchurch October 2010

What a fabulous trip with my cluster colleagues to Christchurch. The venues were top notch and the conference very well run.

On reflection, the trip was a great way to bond with the cluster and colleagues from Glenholme.
A couple of the breakouts weren't what I was expecting, but 4 out of 6 wasn't too bad.

The use of technology at the conference was amazing. I sat behind a guy who was typing flat out on his apple laptop, with his iPad perched on the stairwell and he just went back and forth from one to the other conversing on twitter with his iPad and working on something else on his laptop. I was surrounded by these amazing ICT techies and it felt good to be amongst such great forward thinkers in the field.

Principals and ICT Lead Teachers Meeting

Re: Highlight our future direction

Nancy shared the 2010 Implementation of the RCICT Programme.

Discussed the sustainability of the programme in the future, continuing with SOLO

Looking at using SOLO as our main focus of inquiry learning

Looking at a PD Day with Julie and Pam for all teachers within the clusters

Choosing a sprinkling of year 4 Maori students from all clusters and have them work with ICT Lead Teachers to give them the ICT skills and opportunities available. E.g. attending ICT sessions up at the Education Centre honing their skills, the children sharing their ICT skills with other children in the cluster.

10th of August PD with Julie and Pam for same cluster staff who went to the previous course with Julie.

Maori potential approach – Lead Teachers to work with Nicky on the Ka Hikatia programme. Te Marautanga is another document which would support Maori Achievement 1st of September

Each school should have a policy on community partnership and Maori achievement policy.

We need to collect baseline data within the cluster so we have pre and post assessments/surveys that will show what shifts have been made academically and with attitudes.

We need to look at our teaching staff and their levels of empathy toward Maori students and relationships developed between teachers and students – Angus Macfarlane’s teachings.

Policies, procedures, data and action plan to develop to address Maori achievement in ICT.

Web 2.0 Tools – blogs, google.docs and wiki

Lead teachers will focus on wikis, making e-books, digital storytelling, google docs, uploading videos to youtube, uploading pictures and hyperlinks

iTALC is free application which can give you a snapshot of what children in a suite are looking at on their computers. It also gives you the ability to lock out all the computers so you can gain the attention from all the children.

Target Maori students who have leadership potential and some ICT skills. Teachers would have to take some responsibility that the child would be given opportunities.

4th of August first meeting at Westbrook with ICT cluster and have the four children and sizes for their tshirts.

BooksAliveLeadTeacherClusterMeetingEducationCentre30Jun

Lyn shared a programme called www.jibjab.com which has head shots of teachers superimposed on other bodies running around playing soccer. Fantastic fun for the children to use.

Annemarie suggested another fun website www.blabberize.com Good for children who need help with oral language. The children talk, but the sound comes out of a moving mouth (animal or people).

I had my second opportunity to use wireless. I was much more successful today!

Control panel, internet options, connections, LAN settings, replace the number with the supplier's numbers.
Important to write down the glenholme school numbers, before I put in the supplier's numbers, so that I can change the numbers back at the end of the session.

Press okay, then okay again. Right click on wireless on toolbar. View available wireless networks, click on the school who is providing wireless. Hit connect. Next go to internet explorer and type in www.google.com You will be asked for a username and password, this is supplied by the wireless school, type it in and I should be connected.

Lorraine ran the Literacy Alive Through eBooks

http://rellco.wikispaces.com/ then resources on left hand side of wiki, the books alive
This is an excellent literacy resource where the children can read stories interact with them, personalise stories, listen to and watch story videos.

Good tip: F11 displays a full screen view, type F11 again and it will revert back to the original screen

TeacherObservationsatGlenholmeandactivboardactivities

I have completed ICT observations in the Pohutukawa and Totara Teams, as well as Sue S. Still to observe Sheree and will do so in Term 3.

It was pleasing to see that the digital workstations and activboards are being used in the classrooms by the teachers and some of the students. A great start with the teachers, a lot of them coming out of their comfort zone to produce a lesson. Half of the observations actually had the children involved in using the equipment, which was good to see.

Movers and shakers: Lynda Vercoe produced a fabulous lesson using the digital camera to video the class and then upload it to the blog using her digital workstation. The children were involved with all the ICT equipment every step of the way.

Sue Schuler's children demonstrated that they are ICT savvy, telling the teacher which icons to press on the activboard to produce results. They are also knowledgeable with the computers and type in the username and passwords on their own to access reading and writing sites. Wow!

Deni is also using her activboard often and daily to implement her daily classroom programme. Great to see!

ActivboardTrainingSTMarys11Jun2010

Sue S and I attended more activboard training today at St Mary's School.

There was so much crammed into the day, some way above my head, but I did find out how to 'steal text' from other programmes than activinspire and place it directly on to a flipchart.

I also learnt how to use the webcam tool to take pictures online or in my documents and place on a flipchart. The ufo tool is excellent and I will show the children on Monday how to take pictures using this tool and cutting outlines of pictures to transfer to activinspire. The children will be able to use these tools to write stories and have pictures to enhance their written work.

I also learnt how to use the video screen tool which will be fantastic to use in so many different ways. I can record strategies and processes in maths, where it shows the pen writing the step by step process, so the children can play it should they need help with particular maths lessons. It will also be a great tool to use during the production in term 3, where the children can create their own stories and characters and makes the characters move and record their voices for each character.

I will give the class a lesson on the above on Monday morning.

The new browser tool is amazing and has so many activities and actions within it. So many things to use, but so little time to play with it. I will let the children fiddle with it and see what they come up with.

A worthwhile course to attend. I learnt so much and now need to teach the children how to use the tools.

ActivboardTrainingStMarys9thofJune2010

Today Deni, Sue and I attended Activboard Training at St Marys from 3.45 to 4.45pm.

Richard went over how to makes containers, the use of the clock, how to copy and transfer pictures from the internet to activinspire, how to use mathematical shapes, and how to download activities from Promethean Planet.

I asked Richard about my overhead projector shutting down. He seems to think that my bulb needs replacing. I need to jot down what actually happens, which lights are blinking, so Richard can identify the cause. He suggested if the orange light is blinking when it shuts off, then it is most likely the bulb. If this is the case, contact Karl.

I also asked him about how to get our activvotes up and running. He said we do need a hub key. Will need to ask Nancy if we can purchase one. Richard is happy to come in for approx half hour to an hour to set them up for us. He will email and let me know dates.

I hope to try the transferring of pictures and also taking pictures of children to place on the activboard. I will have a go at this tomorrow at school with the children.

ICTLeadTeacherMeetingRotoruaPrimary9thofJune2010

Today the cluster met with Lorraine Watchorn at Rotorua Primary School. Lorraine wanted to set up guidelines for meetings that we would have in the future. We all decided that we would start and end with a karakia.

Lorraine presented her minutes in Google.doc and is keen for us to begin using it. We will be having a session in the near future about how useful google.doc can be.

There was positive feedback from the cluster about the PD with Angus Macfarlane.

Lorraine shared her ICT journey with the cluster and then the rest of the cluster did the same. It was interesting hearing about the backgrounds and expertise of each person in the cluster. There was a lot of experience and skilled ICT teachers in our midst. I found out Annemarie spent her childhood years in Jamaica! I'll have to find out more!

AngusMcFarlanePD4Jun2010

Today all the ICT Clusters assembled at our school for professional development with Angus Macfarlane. Dr Macfarlane is a Professor in Maori Research at the University of Canterbury.

I really enjoyed the day because it was a timely reminder of what I should be doing to improve achievement with our Maori students, as well as reinforcing behaviour strategies that I could use in the classroom.

Angus covered: Culturally responsive pedagogies, Moair experiences of success, The educultural Wheel, The Hikairo Rationale and Angents of Change - Leadership in Educultural Communities.

Some of the ideas I took away from the day were:

To greet the children individually in the morning.
Let the children know you like being a teacher and love being with the kids.
Marking their work and giving feedback.
When disciplining a student, never say please, say thank you at the end of the request.
Don't just describe what you want the children to do, always manifest a model.
Share my own stories and life experiences with the children (I always do!)
Smile more, be humorous and add a lot more laughter. A warm smile is a human touch!
Make contact with parents of children who are doing well at school.
Encourage the children to set high goals - Where are our scientists and engineers?

The Hikairo Rationale is based on concepts about culturally responsive teaching and learning approaches by Angus Macfarlane.

Huakina Mai - Opening Doorways - greeting the children in the morning
Ihi -- Demonstrating Assertiveness - no nonsense is accepted, discipline handled in
an appropriate manner.
Kotahitanga - Establishing Inclusion - the teacher gets on with students, warm manner
humour, teaching practice makes connections with the real world
Awhinatia - Regulating Fluidity - transitions are smooth, uses proximity control
I Runga I te Manaaki - Engendering Care - showing fairness, gentle care
Rangatiratanga - Enhancing Meaning - asking thought provoking questions, insisting on
emphasis on thinking, critical thinking, providing feedback
Orangatanga - Maintaining Pulse - an atmospher where culture matters, relevance in
the curriculum and the pedagogies, offering choice

ICTCommunityMeeting31May

Today the team met to discuss what had been happening in the teams around the school. Most of the blogs have been established.

I have created a google document for the Totara Team in the hope that our team minutes will be easier to do. Trialling at the moment, so far so good.

As a team we will be presenting an indepth look at part whole and sequencing HOT maps in Week 9.

ICTLeadTeacherClusterMeetingMalfroy

Met up with the cluster Wednesday afternoon at Malfroy School. We all shared what we had been doing in our schools.

Annemarie had half an hour to present her inquiry presentation. Was very rushed and hard to take in the meaning of Inquiry learning in such a short time.

The milestone report has been completed by Nancy, which was a huge job for her, however we have all made leaps and bounds with our learning due to this task.

The minutes of this cluster meeting has been put on the wiki.

The cluster hope to meet as a group to look at the ins and outs of moviemaker sometime in the near future.

ICTClusterMeetingWestbrookSchool19May2010

Today the cluster met as Willow and colleagues from Sunset Primary were presenting charts that they had produced on SOLO Taxonomy so far.

Today I met Lorraine Watchorn for the first time. She will be our facilitator next year!

I thought the work that Sunset had done thus far with SOLO was fantastic. Their school had obviously taken SOLO on in a big way. They had rubrics for their school values which was on their report forms. They had created school wide rubrics on their Sustainability Unit with examples of activities the teachers could implement that covered pre-structural through to extended abstract. They had rubrics that were translated into te reo Maori. The reo teacher had a book that she pasted all rubrics into (Great idea)

Since Julie Mills SOLO workshop last Thursday, we found out that we weren't delving deep enough with the rubrics we had been creating. Willow had already gone back and started modifying the rubrics they had created.

I know that Glenholme Staff will need to ensure that the language of SOLO is used through the entire rubric. We will also need to use the visual maps to delve deeper and give our students a better understanding of what they are learning. The Community Learning Team will meet in the next couple of weeks to plan how we will present Julie's latest workshop to the school.

The rubrics need to be set out with pre-structural at the bottom and work upwards. Staff to be advised.

We also discussed our trials and tribulations working on the wiki, however there was some satisfaction from many about the learning curve.

I was given release today before our meeting at 1:30PM. I really appreciated this time where I reinforced my wiki skills and uploaded files, edited movies for the wiki.

MilestoneReport

What a challenging exercise this was! After collecting the information with Sue, I set to task organising the information and setting it out so that it was user friendly for Nancy to pull the information she would need. Working in the cluster wiki was a whole new experience altogether. It was slow and would freeze, so I decided to type all the information into a word document.

The only time I was able to work on the report was while I was at home, however all my information was on my school laptop and I was unable to gain internet acess on my school computer at home. I had to transfer the data on to my home computer in order to be able to work online. This became an onerous task, as documents, pictures, planning and rubrics needed to be transferred over!

However, after transferring my document on to the wiki, it threw my entire formatting out. The school logo pictured disappeared, bullet points disappeared, everything was underlined, paragraphs no longer existed and everything was bunched together, the font was tiny, colours had also been affected. So I started to fix all the formatting errors, only to find that after every few lines that I corrected, the wiki would freeze and I would have to sign out and start all over again. This occurred numerous times and so I had to save my work every couple of lines. Talk about FRUSTRATION!!!!!!

Hoorayyyyyyyyyyyyy all the information was on, the way I had intended the formatting to be. Now further challenges. How do I create links, how do I put pictures on the wiki, how do I create a movie of evidence and put it on the blog. Thank goodness for my son!!! He helped me with the links and pictures and after many hours of muddling and fiddling, I worked out how to embed a you tube video.

I did find this whole experience a real pain!!! In hindsight, it would have been a good idea to spend time with the cluster and learn how to make links and videos and upload them to google etc etc prior to this exercise.

POSITIVES: The positives however is that I now know how to create hyperlinks on the wiki. I learnt how to upload files to the wiki. I learnt how to create a movie using the flipcamera. I created a youtube account. I uploaded a video to youtube and I was able to embed it on to the wiki.

Day1ofthestartofmyblog

I've decided to keep a journal of my ICT journey as lead teacher at school. I hope to keep it current and use it as a reference to pinpoint all the ICT learning I encounter this year.

I feel this will a great way to log all entries of workshops, courses, lead teacher meetings etc that I attend.
